Abstract
999,771. Expansion joints. E. LUBBERT, U. FINSTERWALDER, R. JECHT. E. RUF, and E. LUBBERT Jnr. Aug. 28, 1961 [Aug. 27, 1960], No. 30879/61. Heading E1V. An expansion joint between concrete slabs, in e.g. an airport runway, comprises longitudinally aligned pairs of upwardly open hollow members 2, 2<SP>1</SP> of T-form in plan spaced by a gap 6. Each hollow member has a rear wall 5 apertured to receive longitudinal tensioning rods 9 and a front wall 3 with a flange 4 recessed to receive a cover plate 7 which is screwed at 8 to one flange and slides freely on the other. To assemble the joint members the rods 9 are passed through the apertures in the walls 5, pairs of members are aligned and temporarily connected and adjacent pairs are secured together by members 10 welded thereto. Each member has anchoring rods 11 welded to its underside and is located above a transverse tensioning rod 12. The concrete is then poured and allowed to harden before the rods 9 are tensioned. The members 2, 2<SP>1</SP> may be filled with cement &c. and covered by a steel plate (not shown).
