Abstract
1401209 Structures of reinforced concrete beams R MACCHI 28 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 35291/72 Headings E1G and EIW Reinforced concrete beams of hollow cross section are used in bridges and viaducts where each prestressed beam is supported by engagement of a stepped flange 1A with a corresponding step 3A of an adjacent beam. Each beam is secured in end to end relation with its neighbour by introducing a concrete or epoxy resin fillet 15 into the spaces 61, 63 between the beam ends allowing the fillet to harden and then placing the junction in compression by tensioning reinforcing bars 13 anchored to the inside of end flanges 9, 11. Initially the fillet 15 may be of temporary construction which may be removed and remade after settlement of the concrete beams.
