Abstract
403,524. Road paving. BIER, H., 46, Reichgasse, Vienna. Dec. 13, 1932, No. 35285. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1931. [Classes 20 (iv) and 107.] A road is constructed of a series of substantially parallel spaced girders disposed transversely or obliquely to the direction of the road and directly forming part of the road surface, the girders being embedded in a layer of concrete, tar, asphalt, or gravel, or secured to any other suitable foundation. In one construction, the girders 1, Fig. 13, are of inverted channel section and are first placed in parallel spaced relationship, obliquely of the road, on a foundation layer 11 (right-half, Fig. 1), and are subsequently rolled or depressed into this layer. The girders may be spaced apart by unconnected small blocks of wood, metal, or stone, which are also depressed into the layer 11. The outerends of the girders are covered by angle-irons 6 or bars 5, and their inner ends are connected to an anchoring bar 7 disposed centrally of the road. In another construction, the girders are arranged transversely of the road and are supported by longitudinal girders 8, Fig. 3, also embedded in the layer 11. The flanges of the girders 1 are pierced to receive longitudinal anchoring bars 2, or alternatively, these bars are notched and engage with the lower edges of the girder flanges. The girders may be straight as shown, or they may be of zig-zag formation in plan, and may also be curved to conform with the camber of the road. In modifications, the girders are disposed on a foundation layer of longitudinally arranged wooden beams, rods, bamboo, or reeds, to which they are secured by screws, nails, hooks, or wires. The joints may be filled with sand, loam, or the like. In the case of iron structure foundations, such as bridges, the girders are connected directly thereto. Girders of I or V section may alternatively be employed, and in all cases may be provided with projections or ribs to prevent the skidding of vehicles thereon.
