Rollers and roller heads.-The rollers of the drawing-apparatus of preparing and spinning machines, particularly rollers of such small diameter that the nips of consecutive pairs may be arranged close together, are made, at least in part, of magnetic material and are driven by a shaft having the diameter of normal rollers, a positive drive being effected by means of a magnetic field caused to pass through the driven rollers. Such magnetic arrangements may be used in place of the usual weighting-arrangement. Magnets comprising sleeves 10, 11, Fig. 2, constituting the pole pieces, connected if desired by a cross bar 5, are mounted on the driving-shaft 3, and the rollers 2 freely rest on them. The contacting portions of the pole pieces and the rollers may be fluted, striated, or provided with gear teeth; the rollers may be fluted correspondingly to the fluted portions of the bottom rollers 1, 7, 8. Series of small rollers may be provided as shown in Fig. 3, and may be driven at progressively increasing speeds by suitably arranging the diameters of the parts in contact with the pole pieces. Stationary permanent magnets or electromagnets may be mounted adjacent to the movable magnets to increase the field or may be used in substition therefor, or may be used directly to magnetize the small rollers. The material may be pressed on the small rollers by any suitable means, for example by a fixed member provided with a smooth surface. A cleaning-device is provided for the magnets and for the roller 2, and may comprise a cylindrical brush mounted on the driving-shaft between adjacent magnets.
