Abstract

325,817. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 26, 1928. Divided on 325,309. Unsaturated hydrocarbons are separated from gas mixtures containing them by washing the said gas mixtures, if desired under pressure, with a liquid ketone containing more than three carbon atoms in the molecule. Suitable ketones for this purpose are methyl-ethyl-ketone, methyl-propylketone, diethyl-ketone, diacetone alcohol, ketone oils, acetophenone, cyclohexanone, and methylcyclohexanone. Examples are given in which (1) a gas mixture containing 8 per cent of acetylene, obtained by the thermal treatment in the electric arc of the gas obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of coal, is washed with cyclohexanone under a pressure of 20 atmospheres in such. a manner, that while leading the liquid in a cycle, 100 litres of cyclohexanone are allowed to act on 158 cubic metres of gas per hour. The residual gas which comprises mainly hydrogen may be used while still under pressure for a process which requires hydrogen under pressure, e.g. for hydrogenation.
