Abstract

543,327. Hydrocarbons. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. .July 18, 1940, No. 11843. Convention date. July 19, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Long chain aliphatic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons are obtained by heating a primary aliphatic alcohol or aldehyde having more than 8 carbon atoms in the chain, in the liquid phase and in the presence of a dehydrogenating catalyst. The preferred re-action temperature is between 225‹-250‹ C. The pressure may be atmospheric or higher. Catalysts mentioned include finely divided iron, nickel and cobalt. If it is desired to operate at atmospheric pressure, a release of the generated gas is necessary, otherwise in a closed system a pressure of 800-900 1b. per square inch is produced. In some cases, particularly at atmospheric pressures, hydrogen and carbon monoxide are eliminated simultaneously with the formation of a hydrocarbon containing one. less carbon atom than the original aldehyde but with terminal unsaturation. In examples, (1) pure octadecanol-1 is heated to 225‹-250‹ C. in the presence of 10 per cent. of nickel catalyst under atmospheric pressure, to produce a mixture of heptadecene-1 and heptadecane. (2) Pure tetradecanol-1 is heated in a closed autoclave with a nickel catalyst under 450-500 1b. per square inch pressure of hydrogen for 2¢ hours at 250‹ C. to.give tridecane. (3) Commercial octadecanol-1 is treated in a stainless steel autoclave with reduced nickel-on-kieselguhr under 300-350 lb. per square inch of hydrogen for 4¢ hours at 250‹ C. to give on distillation of the products pure heptadecane. (4) Pure octadecene-9-ol-1 is heated in an open flask with a nickel catalyst from 215‹-270‹C. during 4 hours. A rapid evolution of gas takes place and heptadecene-8 is produced. Other starting materials mentioned include such primary alcohols or the corresponding aldehydes as decanol-1, dodecanol-1, tetradecanol-1, linoleyl alcohol, eleostearyl alcohol, 2-heptyl-heptanol-], 3-propyloctanol-1, and pentyl-2-nonene-2-ol-1.
