Abstract

1,209,242. Saturated aliphatic alcohols. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 14 March, 1968 [18 March, 1967], No. 12322/68. Heading C2C. Saturated aliphatic alcohols are produced by hydrogenation of olefinically unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes in a single stage in continuous operation at elevated temperature, e.g. 120- 250‹ C. wherein a supported catalyst is used which contains 60 to 100% by weight of metallic nickel with reference to the metal content of the catalyst. The hydrogenation can be carried out in the liquid phase, at a pressure of up to 50 atmospheres, wherein 3 to 10 moles of hydrogen is used per mole of unsaturated aldehyde. The supported catalyst may have a metal content of 1 to 40% by weight with reference to whole catalyst, and 40% by weight of the metal content can be an activator The example prepares 2-ethyl hexanol containing some 2-ethylhexanal.
