Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for.-The shaft bearing in the casing of a rotary p u m p used for lubricant - destroying liquids is subjected to a pressure of lubricant greater than the pressure developed by the pump. In a combined fuel and lubricating oil pump, the latter has a groove 120 or a duct 121 for leading oil at the delivery pressure to the shaft 71 where it enters the partition separating the two pumps or to a point in the interior of the partition. The oil pressure is maintained higher than the liquid fuel pressure by adjusting the spring of ball byepass valves.
