Compound boilers; sectional boilers.-The smoke or fire tubes of a locomotive return-tube or vertical boiler are replaced by a number of smoke-tube elements e, Figs. 1, 2, forming a high pressure steam generator, which is supplied with hot feedwater pruduced by the condensation of low pressure steam generated in the casing c surrounding the elements and enclosing the furnace s. The lower smoke-tube elements may be replaced by elements consisting of groups of water-tubes arranged within smoke - tubes. Steam is led off through U-shaped superheating tubes p extending from headers q in the smokebox into the spaces between the elements. Vertical smoke-tube elements l may be, connected to the horizontal elements. In a vertical boiler, smoke-tube elements h, Fig. 7, are, arranged in rings within an annular casing d forming a low pressure. boiler. The elements are connected to a water collector n and a steam collector q. In a modification, a second annular casing is arranged within and connected to the annular casing d.
