Abstract
323,065. Harmer, F. E. Oct. 11, 1928. Hoods. - In hoods of the kind in which a flexible cover is adapted to be drawn over the roof means are provided for locking one or more of the hoop sticks in any desired position such means comprising slidable members mounted in the hoop sticks or ribs and operable by a cam or cams to engage the rib guides. The hood comprises two spring rollers 2, 4 on which are wound a cover 3 and a lining 5 secured to a front rib 7 one or more intermediate ribs being provided, the last ribs being adapted to slide on guides 10 arranged longitudinally or transversely. The front rib 7 is hollow and contains slidable members 24 acting through rubber &c. buffers 26 on blocks 27 adapted to engage the slides 10 to lock the cover. The members 24 are operated by a cam or cams 22 mounted on a hand operated spindle 20. The. cam 22 carries also a hook 30 adapted to engage a pin 31 on the front fixed member 8, Fig. 4, to draw the rib 7 forwards and lock it. In a modification the hook 30 is mounted on a plate 60 acting on the cam 22 by means of notches 61, 62, and a pin 63. The ribs 6, 7 are interconnected by flexible means acted on by elastic means in order to close the ribs together when-the hood is opened. In a modification each alternate rib 43, Figs. 7 and 10 is channel-shaped in which is mounted a spring-biased spindle, 45 having pulleys 53, 54. Flexible bands 13 are connected to these pulleys and to the ribs 6, 7 and fixed rib 9, the spindle 45 and pulleys winding up the bands 13 as the hood is opened and assisting it. The ends of the ribs 43 are provided with jaws 37, Fig. 10, which embrace guides 36 of the shape shown. The spring rollers 2, 4 may be geared together and one of them provided with a sprocket 70, Fig. 15, over which a chain 71 passes, one end of the chain being connected to the front rib 7 and the other end to a cable &c. 73 which passes over a pulley 74 and is secured to the front rib. Motion is imparted to the chain and cable by hand or by power. Specifications 323,063 and 323,064 are referred to.
