Abstract

418,690. Chain gearing ; racks. HARCOURT, B. W., and MANN, A. J., c/o Harcourt, Ltd., Theodore Street, Birmingham. June 27, 1933, No. 18266. [Class 80 (i).] Two or more chains x, y have their inner links a<1> and outer links a formed with undercut projections, so that when the chains are fed together with outer links of one opposite to inner links of the other, they form an extensible strut which is rigid in the plane of the paper. The flexible, non-engaging parts of the chains are housed in channels g in a frame which may be pivoted. In the form shown, the strut is extended by a sprocket wheel h engaging with one chain and driven by worm gear from a handle l. Alternatively, the driven member f, such as a windscreen may be moved by hand and held by a member q spring-pressed against one or both chains. More than two chains may be used, the inner ones having engaging means at both edges. The strut may be stiffened laterally by webs p on the outer links a, Fig. 9. The webs interlock to form a reinforcing rib.
