Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves. - Relates to steam power. installations of the kind in which a set of reciprocating engines exhausts into a turbine, and in which the turbine is cut out when the reciprocating engine is reversed. The change-over valve 5 which diverts the exhaust to the condenser when the engine 2 is reversed is of the butterfly type, its movable member 5d being adapted to close on alternative faces as shown in Fig. 2. The valve spindle 5e is rocked by a steam actuated servo-motor 6 acting through rack and pinion gearing. When the main engine is reversed, an arm 20 on the reversing shaft 21 moves the pilot valve 10 of the servo-motor through rod 23, link 25, and arm 26. The pilot valve may also be moved by a hand operated lever 27, but the arrangement is such that this lever is effective only when the reciprocating engine is running ahead. The valve stem 16, Fig. 5, of the pilot valve is lifted by a lever 19 against the action of an adjustable spring 17 and carries a valve 13 which controls communication between a pressure steam pipe 10<a> and the servo-motor pipe 10<b> and also a piston valve 14 adapted to connect the pipe 10b with the condenser. In large installations two changeover valves may be provided.
