Abstract
400,438. Pneumatic relays. HARRISON, H. G., Onwards, Sycamore Road, Farnborough, Hampshire. Dec. 3, 1932, No. 34247. [Class 8 (ii).] In marine power plants comprising an internalcombustion engine fitted with a reverse gear box, the gears are reversed by a servo-motor, the control valve of which is actuated by a single lever and the control valve spindle is connected to the regulating means of the engine to control its speed. A single hand lever 50 connected to a rack 43 rotating the valve 13 which is connected by the rod 49 to the throttle of the engine and the vacuum for operating the servo-motor is supplied by the pipe 23. The servo-motor piston rod 4 is connected to the lever 47 of the reversing gear. The valve 13 has ports 38, 39 connected to atmosphere and port 37 connected to vacuum. These ports co-operate with ports 16, 17, 18 and grooves 19, 20 in the valve face in such a manner that when the lever 50 is moved to " ahead " the port 37 aligns with the groove 20 and vacuum is applied to one end of the cylinder 1 moving the reversing gear. Further movement of the lever 50 in the same direction merelv causes further opening of the throttle the port 37 still remaining in contact with the groove 20. The slide valve 14 is connected to the piston rod 4 and upon return of the lever 50 to " stop," port 32 is connected to the port 16 and the piston returns to its mid-stroke when the slide valve 14 opens both ends of the cylinder 1 to atmosphere. The cycle is similar when the lever 50 is moved to "astern." A cock 53 may be provided in the pipe 23 so that suction to the servo-motor may be shut off and the engine speed increased in neutral if required.
