Abstract

192,191. Edwards, G. T., and Blakeborough, R. A. Nov. 4, 1921. Valves controlled by pilot and relay valves.-A valve device adapted to close in the event of an abnormal flow through the valve has a piston actuated sluice valve member adapted to work in the throat of a Venturi tube and controlled by a pilot valve actuated by the pressure at the throat. The valve b is connected by a spindle c to a piston d controlled by an auxiliary piston valve f so arranged as to connect the two sides of the piston alternately to pressure and exhaust. The auxiliary valve spindle is extended to provide a knob k for hand actuation and is fitted with a movable piece r adapted to be engaged by the shorter arm p<1> of a weighted lever p. The lever p is connected at o to a rod n<1> on a piston n working in a cylinder l and normally held in its raised position by throat pressure admitted through a pipe m. When actuating the auxiliary valve by hand to reset the apparatus the piece r is lifted clear of the lever p<1>. A second piston subject to conduit pressure may be arranged to act on the lever against the action of the piston n. In a modification the two pistons are arranged in a common spindle and actuate a four-way plug-cock through lever and catch mechanism. The sluice valve may be fitted with a ring to close the sump when the valve is open or the inlet may be made smaller than the outlet so that the stream jumps over the sump.
