Abstract

493,760. Self-closing valves. GUEST & CHRIMES, Ltd., and PARKIN, D. W. Feb. 13, 1937, No. 4351. [Class 135] A valve device adapted to close automatically in the event of the flow becoming abnormal comprises a sluice valve with parallel or wedge shaped doors, a stream-lined valve or a butterfly valve actuated by conduit pressure acting on a double-acting piston under the control of a pair of relay valves in turn controlled by a simple lift valve actuated by a float. The Boat 3 works in one branch of a mercury U-tube connected by pipes 20, 21 with the throat and full bore sections of a Venturi pipe in the main conduit. The opening side of the main piston is supplied with full bore pressure through a restricted orifice, said pressure being exhausted through a piston actuated relay valve 16. The connections between the valve closing side of the main piston and the main conduit or drain are controlled by a piston actuated shuttle-lift valve 15. The float 3 is coupled by an arm 7 with a shaft 9 carrying a second arm with an adjustable tappet adapted to engage a, bell-crank lever 12 linked to the control valve 13. When the flow becomes excessive the level in the branch of the U-tube containing the float falls causing the float to open the valve 13. This relieves the pressure on the actuating pistons of the two relay valves which move to connect the valve opening side of the main piston to atmosphere while connecting the valve closing side to full-bore pressure. As the float approaches its lowest position a valve 5 on the float spindle closes the connection between the pipe 21 and the U-tube while a valve 18 linked to the arm 7 vents the float chamber. The valve 18 may be replaced by a piston actuated valve. The main valve is reopened by manipulating the control valves by hand. Where the flow of fluid is controlled during resetting by a manually or mechanically operated valve at the downstream side of the hydraulically operated valve the valve 16 may be omitted..
