Abstract

2090. Cockburn, D., and MacNicoll, D. Jan. 26. Lift valves; actuating.-A stop-valve, which is adapted to be opened by direct pressure of the fluid on the valve member and closed by mechanical means comprising a screwed spindle, is so arranged that, on actuating the spindle to allow the valve to open, a pilot valve is operated so as to admit pressure to one side of a piston and thereby cushion the opening of the main valve. A second pilot valve is provided by means of which the main valve may be closed in an emergency. The valve member B closing the inlet port a is mounted on a spindle E having a handle N and sliding in a threaded screw I rotatable in a cross-head J by a wheel M. A piston G is mounted on the spindle E and works in a cylindrical chamber F, which communicates on the side remote from the valve B with the inlet a by means of a pipe j<1>, j<2>, j<3>, and on the other side is connected to the atmosphere by a pipe k. The passage j<1>, j<2>, j<3> is controlled by a valve k<1> mounted on the valve casing and having a stem m<2> passing through a lever t and carrying a nut s which is engaged by the lever. The lever is cranked, and has at one end a sloping surface x which is engaged by a collar T on the screw I when the wheel M is rotated, thus opening the valve k<1> and admitting fluid into the cylinder F. The piston G is fitted with leaky rings P so that the valve B is allowed to open slowly. In order to close the valve in an emergency, a valve k<2> in the pipe k is opened by hand by means of the lever t, which is raised so as to engage a nut s<1> on the valve stem. The pressure on the further side of the piston G is then unbalanced and the valve closes quickly.
