Valves closing with rush of fluid; actuating -A combined stop and isolating or emergency steam valve of the kind operable manually at the valve or from a distance, and automatically in the event of breakage of the steam-pipe. comprises a piston h in a cylinder 9 above the valve 1, a screw 5 for closing down by hand, and a duplex control cock 14 operated from any suitable position by a handle p acting through a cord r guided over pulleys s. The control cock consists of a straight-through closure for connecting the space above the piston h with the boiler e through the passage f, g, and a three-way closure for placing the space under the piston h in communication with the steampipe z beyond the stop valve, when this valve is to remain open, or in communication with the exhaust, condenser or atmosphere when the valve is to be closed by the pressure above the piston h. The rod 6 below the piston is made preferably of larger diameter than the rod 6<1> which extends outside the casing. When the valve is open, the collar 7 seats on the bush 7<1> and prevents leakage of steam upwards along the rod 6. When the steam pipe breaks the reduction of pressure is transmitted to the space below the piston h whereupon the pressure above closes down the valve 1 automatically.
