Abstract

145,464. Samain, P. Oct. 19, 1917, [Convention date]. Valves closing with rush of fluid; valves controlled by pilot or relay valves; closure members. -Relates to a volume flow-regulating valve which is adapted also to close automatically in the event of a water-pipe bursting. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the valve 7<a> is operated by pistons 7, 8 subject to pressure from the piping through the passages 11, 14, and 15. If the demand is excessive the pressure falls near the valve and in the piston chamber 17 so that the valve lowers and restricts the passage. Should the pipe burst, the rush of fluid acting on the baffle pendulum 2, in either direction, actuates the stirrup 3 and the double-piston auxiliary valve 4, 5 which opens the passage 13 to pressure, and the passage 14 to exhaust at 16 whereupon the main valve 7<a> is closed. The valve can be opened or closed by operating the stirrup 3 and auxiliary valve 4, 5 by hand. The pistons 7, 8 may be disposed vertically, as shown, or horizontally, and may be of the differential type, or a single piston may be used. In the latter case, a conical throttle device is used to control the outflow of water from behind the piston to give a slow closure without shocks. The packing of the actuating-pistons, in one form, consists of divided leathers which are lubricated by grease supplied through a tube from outside. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the valve may comprise a lift tubular closing-member packed by a cup-leather and a springy bronze tubular member acted on by springs disposed within the flow passage. A form of valve is shown in Fig. 9 (Cancelled), in which the pendulum 67 is connected directly to the main valve member 64, which itself forms the baffle, and is held back by compression and tension springs 71, 72 acting through a pivoted beam 70. This valve may also be actuated by supplying or exhausting fluid to and from the piston chamber 63 through the passage 73. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
