Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA K. IIINCHMAN, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Philadelphia, in the county of. Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Governor Valves for Steam Engines, (Case F,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention 15 the provision of a governor valve for steam engines through the medium of which any required pressure-for different conditions can be constantly maintained.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the 1nvention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof The figure is a section of the governor valve constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention known to me.
Referring by numeral to the said drawing 1 is a valve casing and 2 and 3 are cylinders in which are arranged pistons 4 and 5, respectively. In the casing 1 is a d1aphragm 6 having a valve seat 7, and at the inlet end of said casing 1 is a holder 8 for a wire screen 9, the said holder 8 being associated with a cover 10. The said cover 10 is bolted to the holder 8 and the casing 1 so that the holder can be readily removed for the cleansing or renewal of the screen 9, the function of which is to preclude the passage of foreign substance in the steam to the valve seat 7. Bolted to the casing 1 art a point opposite the valve seat 7 is a closure section 11", and arranged above said closure section is a balancing piston 12 on the stem 13 of the valve 14 that is opposed to the seat 7 The piston 4 is connected with the valve or valve body 14 through the medium of a rod 15, and formed partly in the rod 15 and partly in the piston 4 is a conduit 16 designed for use in conjunction with conduits 17 in the cylinder 2. Also connected to the piston 4 is a rod 18 to which the comparatively large piston 5 is connected. The cylinder 3 is provided with drain cocks 19 and 20, and intermediate of the outlet portion of the valve casing 1 and the cylinder portions 21 and 22 at opposite sides of the piston 5 are a conduit 23 and branch conduits 21 and 22", each of the said branch conduits b ing provided with a valve a sh wn,
Threaded through the cover 24 of the piston chamber 21 is an adjusting screw 25 on which is mounted a jam nut 26 that is equipped with handles 27 In the practical operation of my improvement steam entering the inlet portion of the casing 1 serves to raise thevalve or valve body 14 so that steam is enabled to pass into the outlet portion of the casing 1. Then as pressure builds up in the said outlet portion 1t serves to. force the piston 4 upwardly so that steam is free to pass through the ports 16 and 17 into the upper chamber 30 of the cylinder 2. This steam has the eifect of forcing the piston 4 downwardly so as to throttle or entirely close the passages 16 and I? referred to. The valve body 14 being connected with the piston 4 it follows that downward movement of the former will attend downward movement of the latter and in consequence the pressure entering the inlet portion of the casing 1 will be closed to a greater or less extent, and the pressure in the outlet chamber of the casing 1 will be reduced.
When a lower pressure than that referred to is desired, the valve of the branch pipe 21 is opened so as to admit fluid under ressure into the chamber 21. This will ave the effect of forcing the piston 5 downwardly, and in consequence the valve or valve body 14 will be subject to a compound piston control.
When a high pressure is desired the valve 21 is closed and the valve 22 is opened so as to lift the valve or valve body 14 and bring about an increase in the supply of steam through the casing 1.
When the supply referred to is too large, the screw 25 is adjusted to meet the occasion.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letter"- Patent, is
1. The combination in agovernor valve, of a casing having an inlet and an outlet for fluid under pressure and also having a valve seat intermediate of the inlet and outlet, a valve for cooperation with the saidseat, a piston connected with the valve, means whereby when the valve is opened the piston will be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the casing at the side of the piston remote from the'valve, an auxiliary piston connected with the valve and the first-named piston, and valved means whereby the said auxiliary piston may be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the valve casing.
2. The combination in a governor valve, of a casing having an inlet and an outlet for fluid under pressure and also having a valve seat intermediate of the inlet and outlet, a valve for cooperation with the said seat, a piston connected with the valve, means whereby when the'valve is opened thepiston will be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the casing at the side of the piston remote from the valve, an auxiliary piston connected withthe valve and the first-named piston, a conduit leading from the outlet portion of the valve casing, and valved conduits leading from the first-named conduit to supply fluid un der pressure for action against either side of the auxiliary piston.
3. The combination in a governor valve, of a casing having an inlet and an outlet for fluid under pressure and also having a valve seat intermediate of the inlet and outlet, a valve for cooperation with the said seat, a piston con nected with the valve, means whereby when the valve is opened the piston will be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the casing at the side of the piston remote from the valve, an auxiliary piston connected with the valve and the firstnamed piston, and valved means whereby either side of the auxiliary piston may be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the valve casing.
4. The combination in a governor valve, of a casing having an inlet'and an outlet for fluid under pressure and also having a valve seat intermediate of the inlet and outlet, a valve for cooperation with the said seat, a piston connected with the valve, means whereby when. the valve is opened the piston will be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the casing at the side of the piston remotefrom the valve, an auxiliary piston conneeted with the valve and the first-named piston, i valved means whereby either side of the auxiliary piston may be subjected to pressure from the outlet portion of the valve casing, and adjustable means for limiting outward movement of the auxiliary piston.
