Abstract
318,326. Farrelly, M. M. June 19, 1928. Variable-speed gearing comprises worm gearing in which the worm-wheels are portions of a gear surface shown in Fig. 4 in which helical threads or teeth wind round in successive coils upon the inner or concave part of a surface of revolution of circular section or hollow ring. Planetary worms 2, Figs. 1 and 2, mesh with a worm-wheel 3 with external teeth, and with a worm-wheel 1 with internal teeth, the wheels 3 and 1 being different parts of such ideal hollow gear surface. In the variable gear shown, the two part worm-wheel 1 is embodied in a fly-wheel 4, 5 secured to a driving-shaft 8. The worm-wheel 3 is secured to a driven shaft 9. The worms 2 are supported in a loose carrier frame 2<c> secured to a brake drum 10. The friction in the worm gearing causes the speed of the shaft 9 to vary automatically with the load as described in Specification 296,809.
