Abstract

188,448. Marks, E. C. R., (Siemens- Schuckertwerke Ges.). Sept. 13, 1921. Alternating-current motors; motors, gearing for.-Comprises the use of epicyclic gearing between an alternating-current induction motor and the load, with the object of allowing the motor to function as a braking generator when the load drives the motor at more than its synchronous speed during gravity lowering. Motors of this type are controlled usually by inserting starting resistances in the circuit of the induced portion, which arrangement prevents the motor functioning satisfactorily as a brake in the manner stated above. In the present construction the resistances are omitted, and the motor is controlled at starting by the gradual release of a brake band 8, Fig. 2, on the winding drum and the gradual application of a brake 11 to the ring 10 of the transmission gear to produce a regulatable amount of slip of the ring. When the drum is freed from the band 8 and the ring is fixed by the band 11, the motor rotates at full lowering speed, and is free to function as a brake when the load overruns and drives it at more than this speed. Fig. 3 shows a modified arrangement of gear which permits the motor to run continuously in the same direction. When the brake bands 8, 14 are loose and the band 11 is tightened, the drum 6 revolves in the same direction as the central driving-shaft, but when the band 14 is tightened and the bands 8, 11 are loose, the planet gear rotates around the pinion 15 and the drum and driving-shaft revolve in opposite directions. Centrifugal masses may be arranged in parallel with the motor and utilised in a known manner to absorb surplus energy when the motor is running under light load, and give up energy when the motor is overloaded, thus preventing the load variations from reacting on the supply circuit.
