Abstract
601,519. Transmitting mechanical power; motor driving arrangements. COUSE, K. W. Feb. 7, 1945, No. 3111. Convention date, April 1, 1944. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] A variable speed and reversible drive for a shaft 5 comprises an induction motor M and a differential gear 12, 33, 37, 41 housed in a common casing 1, the two wound members 17, 18 of the motor both being rotatable and being connected, respectively, to the sun-wheels 12, 33 of the gear. The planet carrier 9 of the gear drives the shaft. Brakes S, R actuated by hydraulic cylinders 62, 70 and housed in an extension 2 of the casing 1, serve to retard or prevent rotation of the " stator " and rotor members respectively, whereby the speed of shaft 5 and its direction of rotation may be varied. Member 17 preferably has a squirrelcage winding, whilst member 18 carries a normal three-phase winding connected to the supply through brushes 46 bearing on slip rings 45 mounted on a sleeve 26 by which the " stator " member is connected to the gearwheel 33.
