Abstract

An arrangement for low speed high torque electric drive applications e.g., capstans winches etc., uses linear motors to obtain rotational movement. The rim of a pulley wheel serves as the stator for one or more linear motors and, by locating the motor within the rim a low inertia, low cost, compact solution is achieved. The speed can be varied by alteration of the distance of the linear motor from the axis of rotation of the lifting gear structure.
