Abstract

The combined propeller and rudder has a peripheral induction motor to drive the blade. It comprises a fixed ring housing (5), having a rudder stock (4) passing through the bottom of the vessel (1, 2, 3). This housing had radial arms (7) supporting a hub (6) and bearings (8, 9, 10) for the propeller blade (14). The blade rotates freely in an annular recess (17) in the housing, a rear fairing streamlining the latter. The blade periphery (15) has a magnetic iron ring (19) and a squirrel cage winding (20) forming the rotor. The ring housing carries the pole lamination (21) and the stator winding (22). The complete stator is sealed inside a non-magnetic sheath (23).
