Abstract

648,950. Propelling ships. ALLISON, A. Dec. 7, 1948, No. 31665. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXXV] The blades of a screw propeller unit are mounted on the external squirrelcase rotor of an induction motor and sleeves carried by rings or flanges at each end of the primary member abut the stator core and form supports for a sleeve which renders the stator water-tight. In the form shown for a submersible propeller, a sealed hub 1 carrying blades 2 rotates on bearings 8 on a fixed shaft 3 secured within conical casing elements 4, 6 which permit access of water to the hub for cooling and are connected by guide vanes 4a, 6a to an external tube 5. The hub may be of magnetic material so that it can carry a squirrel-cage winding directly, or a separate magnetic core 11 may be used. Fig. 3 shows a modification for use as a ship's propeller and having a shaft supported at one end only.
