Drawing wire.-In a continuous wire-drawing machine, the finishing drum a of a series of draw drums is driven by a differential gear, one member of which is formed with a grooved pulley acted on by a brake block which is adjusted so as to accelerate the speed of the finishing drum according to the diameter thereof, and a. similar differential drive is automatically controlled by passing the wire over a weighted lever which controls the braking pressure on the brake fixed to the part of the differential, and thereby automatically controlling the speed of the draw drums. As shown, the differential drives for the finishing drums a comprise sprockets g freely mounted on sleeves h freely mounted on a countershaft f. A sun wheel j on each sleeve h meshes with planet wheels k mounted loosely on studs l on each wheel g. The wheels k mesh with an internal toothed ring p on a disk q keyed to a bevel-wheel e geared to a bevel-pinion e<1> on the shaft of each finishing drum a. Spring-pressed pawls on the wheels g normally engage teeth on the ring p and the whole rotate together, but when pressure is applied bv a screw s to a brake i integral with the sleeve h, the sun-wheel j is retarded and the motion of the ring p and of the wheel e is advanced. The screw s is set in accordance with the diameter of the drum a. The wire as it passes between the draw drums may be passed over a pulley w<2> on a counterweighted lever which is connected to a brahe-stra.p which controls the motion of the draw drums in a similar manner to that in which the screw s controls the drum a.
