Abstract

178,124. M÷hl, S. April 9, 1921, [Convention date]. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-In hydraulic variable-speed gears comprising two pumps or a pump and motor enclosed in an oilfilled casing capable of rotation the pumps and motors are of the gear-wheel type and of variable capacity. In the form illustrated in Fig. 2, the casing H is fixed to the driving-shaft M and carries an internally-toothed, rim R<1>, which forms a pump in conjunction with a pinion r<1> rotatably mounted on an eccentric E', the motor comprising a toothed rim R<2> connected to the driven shaft N and a pinion r<2> on an eccentric E<2>, The eccentrics are carried by a sleeve L and provided with a slot for an arm T mounted on a sleeve V and provided with a passage U forming the pump outlet and motor inlet. A sleeve c, slidably mounted on the sleeve V and engaging helical grooves on the sleeve L, serves to operate the arm T to adjust the positions of the pump outlet and motor inlet and thereby control the pump and motor. The sleeve L is normally held by a brake band b, but is freed when the driving and driven shafts are mechanically coupled by a bar h being moved into a recess k. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the shaft M carrying the casing may serve as the driving or driven shaft, the shaft L as the driven or driving shaft, and the rim R<2> is connected to a sleeve N normally held by the brake band. The eccentrics E<1>, E<2> are fixed to the shaft L and sleeve W respectively, and the adjusting-sleeve c is slidably mounted on the shaft L and engages helical grooves of different pitch on the sleeves W, V.
