Abstract

315,645. Peel, C. H. Nov. 9, 1928. Lawn-mowers.-In a hand-propelled or powerdriven lawn-mower having co-acting toothed cutters one of which is fixed while the other is reciprocated, the reciprocating cutter is actuated by an eccentric the shaft of which telescopes into the limb of a gear wheel to allow of vertical adjustment of the cutting-apparatus. The stationary blade 21 is provided with flanged end lugs movable vertically along slotted brackets 22 and adjustably secured thereon by bolts 25. The brackets 22 project from the side plates 11, 12, which are connected together by the dead axle 10 and by a shaft 14 driven from internal teeth on the wheels 13 by pinions and ratchets. The movable blade 26 slides on the blade 21 being guided by a key or keys on the blade 21 and held in place by screws 28 passing through slots 29. The blade 26 is reciprocated by an eccentric on a shaft 36 driven by bevel gearing 31, 32 from a transverse shaft 16 which is driven rapidly from the shaft 14 by the chain gearing 18, 19. The shaft 36 is movable vertically in the hub of the bevel wheel 31 being prevented from turning independently of the wheel 31 by a stay. The eccentric operates in a recess in a boss 41 provided with a slotted cover 42.
