Abstract
520,582. Lawn-mowers; clutches. DEHN, F. B. (Cooper Manufacturing Co.). Oct. 20, 1938, No. 30400. [Class 6 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a lawn-mower in which the traction wheels 10, Fig. 3, are journalled on wheel plates 13 and in which the rotary cutter 48 is supported by side frames 42, the side frames are adjustably mounted on the hub 28 of the wheel plate so that the depth of cut may be adjusted, and a roller 64 is carried by extensions of the side frames so that the side frames and wheel plates will rock about axles of the wheels as the roller passes over uneven ground. The wheels 10 are each fixed on studs 12 which are supported on plates 13 and enclosed in a bearing 16. Gear casings 21 with internal gear teeth 22 are rotatably mounted on the wheels 10. An engine 36, Fig. 1, on the deck 49 drives the cutter shaft 26 through the pulley system 35, 33, 31, 32 and the hub 27. A steel pinion 37 on the shaft 26 meshes with the cast iron gear teeth 22. The wheels 10 are driven by ratchet connections consisting of internal teeth 23, Fig. 4, on the wheel 10 coacting with pawls 24 pivoted to the casings 21. Felt washers 19, 39, 40, 45 and 50 are provided to exclude dirt &c. from the various parts, of the mechanism. The support for the deck 49 consists of members 51, Fig. 2, bolted to the ends of the deck 49 and swingable relative to the members 52, which are connected to the housings 42, arcuate slots receiving clamp bolts 57. The two housings 42 are connected by cross-rods 54, 55. Extensions 13a of the plates 13 support clamp bolts 58, and clamp bolts 59 are threaded into the plates 13 to extend through arcuate slots 61 of the chain housings 42. The bed plate 62 having extensions 63 carrying the roller 64 is supported by the side frames 42 which can be rotated relatively to the plates 13 and thus adjust the height of cut which is indicated by pointers 65 on the frames 42. To retain the baseplate 62 parallel to the ground surface, the roller 64 is adjusted relative to he mower by means of the slotted link system 67, 71, 72, 68, 69, the amount of adjustment being indicated by coacting pointers 74, 75. To facilitate tightening the driving chains, the openings 76, Fig. 4, in the chain casing 42 are made slightly arcuate about the cross-rod 54, Fig. 2, as a centre. The cutting edge of the bed-plate is adjustable relative to the rotary cutter by set screws 86, 87, carried by the members 77 coacting with lugs 89 of the side frames. The members 77 are pivoted on pintle elements such as 78, Fig. 6, at the opposite sides of the bed plate 62. The element 78 has an eccentric member 80, which when rotated shifts this end of the bed plate relative to the cutter while the other end remains stationary to compensate for uneven wear &c. of the cutters. The other pintle element is threaded and thus arranged to take up play between the pintle elements and the bed plate.
