Abstract

Lawn-mowers.-In a power-driven machine, the rotary cutter is chain driven from the engine or countershaft and the ground roller is driven through speed-reducing gear from a sprocket wheel over which the cutter-driving chain passes. In the machine shown the engine A drives a countershaft a<2> through chain gearing A<1>, a', A<2>. The countershaft drives the cutter B through a clutch and chain gearing A<3>, a<3>, B<1>. It is provided with a handle for starting the engine. A sprocket wheel D engages the chain a' and drives the roller C through spur gearing D<1>, c. It serves as a chain-tightening wheel, being mounted in a quadrant D<2> pivoted concentrically with the roller axle and adjustable by means of bolts or studs d<2>. A flange D<2x> on the quadrant d<2> prevents the chain a<3> from jumping off the sprocket wheel D. The gearing is enclosed in a case and may be provided with an oilbath. The countershaft a<2> may be dispensed with and the cutter B driven direct from the engine.
