424,079. Mowing-machines. ALLEN & SONS (OXFORD), Ltd., J., and ALLEN, J. J. C., Cowley, Oxford. Oct. 25, 1933, No. 29565. [Class 6 (iii)] A motor-driven mowing-machine, adapted to be guided by handles 6 projecting at the rear, comprises a frame 9 carrying the engine 7, tank 8, gearing and main axle 2 and power shaft 5 ; a forward extension 9a of the frame being provided with a bracket or brackets 21 carrying the finger bar 11. The power shaft 5 is driven from the crank shaft 13 through toothed gears 14, 15, the gear 15 being frictionally secured to plates on the shaft 5 so that it can yield when an obstruction is encountered. A worm 4 on the shaft 5 actuates a co-operating wheel 3 on the main axle 2 to which one or both of the ground wheels 1 may be clutched by forcing pads 28, carried on the ends of spring members 27 extending from a block 26 secured to the axle 2, against the internal flange of the wheel by the movement of rods 36 mounted on the pads and adapted to be canted by a striking ring moved laterally by a yoke actuated by a rock-shaft 34. The cutter bar 22, near one end or about the middle, is connected by an arm 23 and a link 24 to a crank arm 25 on the end of the shaft 5, the crank arm preferably being fitted with a balance weight 25a. The forward end of the machine may be provided with adjustable rollers to vary the depth of cut.
