Abstract

566,715. Mowing-machines. AVELING-BARFORD, Ltd., and HENDERSON, .W. M. Aug. 7, 1943, No. 12786. [Class 6 (iii)] . A mowing-machine of the reciprocating cutter type has the mowing device adjustably connected to one end of an arm, the other end of which is adjustably attached to the front end of the chassis structure, the construction being such that the arm and mowing device can be adjusted about substantially horizontal axes extending longitudinally of the machine. The machine shown comprises a frame structure 10, 13 supported on two wheels 21, 22, the lower wheeled part being in the form of a bogie unit. The frame part 13 is fitted with handles 24 and carries an internal-combustion engine 14 which, through chain-and-sprocket gearing 31, 32, 33, propels the machine. The cutting mechanism 11 comprises fixed spaced fingers 16 and a reciprocating knife bar, and is carried at the forward end of a tube 18 which can be adjusted about its axis on an arm 12. The latter is adjustable about the longitudinal axis 14 of a tubular frame member 25. Thus, the arm can occupy a vertical, horizontal, or an inclined position (as shown in Fig. 3), with the cutter bar horizontal, vertical or inclined as required. The engine drives a shaft carrying crank and connecting rod mechanism 26 which imparts an oscillatory movement to a disc 27, such movement being transmitted by a chain to a shaft 29 in tube 18, the shaft carrying a gear pinion 30 meshing with a rack on the cutter bar.
