[Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group I] A wheeled machine for cutting on a large scale hard or semi-hard stemmed plants comprises a transverse solid cutter shaft (or shafts) in front of and/or laterally of the machine, the cutting edges being in one piece with the body of the shaft, the said edges extending from one to the other end thereof and the diameter of said shaft, including the cutting edges, being less than one inch. In the construction shown, a motor 10, drives through gearing and a clutch element 22, one of the land wheels 14. The clutch is controlled by a spring 24 and arms 23 from a cable 9 operatively connected to the cutter shaft 56 which is mounted in tension bearings 53. On meeting any undue resistance these bearings are moved rearwardly, thereby pushing a rod 55 against one end of a rocker 32 which moves the other end of said rocker forwardly and so pulls on the cable 9 which is attached thereto, thereby disengaging the clutch 22; the machine remaining stationary until the obstruction has been cut throughthis accomplished, re-clutching occurs. The cutter shaft is rotated through gearing 38, 39, 40, 42, 43, chain 46 and sprocket 48 from the shaft 33 of the motor. A reverse gear (position 43a, and gears 44, 45) is provided and is actuated by a lever 51 and cable 50. In a modification, the cutter is arranged at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the machine, and here the sprocket 48 driven a shaft which is geared to the cutter shaft. In a further modification, a plurality of cutters are arranged in alignment.
