Abstract

589,479. Hedge-cutters. LEE, W. S. K. March 28, 1945, No. 7791. [Class 6 (ii)] Relates to power-operated hedge-cutters of the type in which the cutter is mounted on an adjustable framework carried on a wheeled base. According to the invention, the framework consists of a telescopic derrick adjustable in both height and inclination, the power source being connected to the means for adjusting and setting the derrick and for driving the cutter. In the form shown, the wheeled base a is towed behind a tractor by means of a universallyjointed drawbar which, being driven by the tractor motor, also acts as a flexible drive for the mechanism. The drawbar is jointed to a shaft b fitted with two sprockets. One sprocket carries a chain e which drives a bevel gear transmission f, the bevel gear in turn driving a screw g inside a tapped sleeve h, thus providing a means for altering the inclination to the vertical of the telescopic derrick j. The bevel gear transmission incorporates a clutch, controlled by the lever r, enabling the motion of the screw g to be arrested or reversed. The second sprocket, carried by the driving shaft b, drives a chain w which operates a bevel gear joined to the lower end of a telescopic shaft (not shown) passing centrally along the axis of the derrick j. The upper end of this shaft carries a further bevel gear which drives a rotary cutter s. The length of the derrick may be altered by rotation of a hand-wheel o which is connected through a chain p to a sprocket m on which is fixed a crank-arm l. A link rod k connects the crankarm with a point j<SP>3</SP> on an inner section j<SP>2</SP> of the derrick and rotation of the crank-arm therefore causes extension or contraction of the derrick. The rotary cutter s is mounted in a pivoted bracket j<SP>5</SP> which may be fixed in one of several positions relative to the derrick by means of a pin j<SP>7</SP> engaging with holes in a disc x carried by the bracket j<SP>5</SP>. In a modification of the machine, an endless-chain cutter replaces the rotary disc cutter s.
