[Classes 6 (ii) and 6 (iii)] A hedge-trimming machine which may be used for cutting grass &c., comprises a frame mounted upon a single pair of wheels, a transverse arm fixed on the frame at a positior horizontally offset from the wheel axis, a reciprocating cutter at the outer end of the transverse arm, and a handle fixed to the frame for guiding the wheels with respect to the ground and the cutter vertically with respect to the hedge-top. The frame 11 is substantially horizontal when the machine is in use. The transverse arm 15 is tubular and is pivotally connected to a U- shaped piece 17 on the frame so as to turn about a longitudinal axis with respect to the frame. It is locked in position by a clamp 18 on a substantially vertical rod 19 supported by a stay 20. The cutting apparatus comprises a bar 21 carrying teeth 22 and a slidable bar carrying teeth 23 and reciprocated by a pitman 24 and crank 25. Rigid with the bar 21 is a disc 26 provided with a ring of perforations in one or other of which engages a spring-controlled bolt 28 to hold the bar 21 in a vertical, horizontal or inclined position. The cutter is driven from an engine 14 removably mounted on the rear of the frame 11, a belt 32 driving a shaft 33 universally jointed to a shaft 35 passing through the tubular bar 15 and con. nected by bevel gearing to the shaft 38 carrying the crank 25. The wheel axle 13 may be driven from the shaft 33 by a step-down gearing 39, a chain 40 and a dog clutch 42. A second dog clutch may be provided between the axle 13 and one of the wheels 12. Linkage and cable connections 44 connect the clutch to separate manual controls. The arm 15 may be removable or may be arranged to be swung from one side of the machine to the other. The gearing for driving the wheels may be changed or eliminated.
