[Class 6 (iii)] [See also Group XXIII] A mowing - machine comprises longitudinal members 1 and transverse members 2, such as those of a motor car, and a rear differential axle unit 3 secured directly to the longitudinal members, such axle being driven from a motor 4. Main wheels 11 are carried by an axle 12 mounted in bearings in brackets 13 and front wheels 10 are mounted on a short axle carried in a longitudinally pivoted bearing block ; the forward wheels are steered by a column 9 extended to be close to a seat 21 at the rear of the machine. A mower frame 24 is carried in the usual manner on the axle of the wheels 11 and is provided with a tension spring 25 extending forwardly to a bracket 26 depending from the frame. Sprocket wheels 29 on the differential shaft drive chain wheels 28 secured, preferably detachably, to the main wheels 11 giving a speed reduction of about four to one. The main wheels are independently rotatable. The mower blade is driven through a pitman actuated through gearing 40, 41, and a clutch 39 from a shaft 38 driven through one-way clutches from pinions 36 engaging annular gears 35 on the wheels, shearing pins being provided to prevent damage should the blade encounter an obstruction. A spring 45 supports the weight of the finger bar and is sufficiently strong to lift the bar slightly when the clutch is disengaged. The inner end of the bar is supported by a wheel 47 running in the track of one of the steering wheels 10. When the mower is not in use the connecting rod is disengaged and the finger bar raised to vertical position and bolted to the main frame. A handwheel winding up or letting out a chain adjusts the cutting height of the knife bar. Brakes 30 may be fitted on the ends of the differential axle or on the main wheels. A draw hook 50 secured beneath the frame of the mower unit is provided so that the machine may be used as a tractor. A detachable sawing device that may be operated by the machine comprises a crank arm 51 detachably secured to one of the road wheel sprockets and connected by a rod 60 to a bow frame 56 built of rods or tubes and carrying a saw 57. A log to be sawn is clamped in a stillion 67 by a chain 69 tightened by operating a handwheel 79; a lever 73 controls the motor clutch through a cable 75 and the position of the saw is regulated by a handwheel on the end of a column 64. A band pulley 80 or sprocket wheel may be fitted on the machine to drive other mechanism and a countershaft 85 may be fitted ; alternatively, a connecting rod may be attached to the crank 51 to drive an auxiliary machine such as a churn, chaffcutter or pulper ; the crank pin may be adjustable to vary the stroke.
