Abstract

314,130. Scott, J. R. March 27, 1928. Fixed-abutment type; valve-gear and valve-actuating mechanism; valves, distributing and cut-off; packing; bearings, arrangement of.-In a rotary engine of the type having a cylindrical casing formed with a cam abutment and enclosing a central drum 2 which is provided with a radial slot in which a sliding vane 3 is pressed outwardly by spiral springs and the pressure of fluid admitted by a duct 18 to the inner end of the vane, the vane slot extends to the drum shaft 4 and the spiral springs 17 pass through holes in the shaft 4 into the drum 3 so that a long vane and long springs may be used, as shown in Fig. 1 (Prov.). Steam is admitted through a cut-off valve 13 actuated by a stud 14, carried by a flywheel on the engine shaft, which engages an arm 13a on the valve. A reversing engine is shown in Fig. 1 (Comp.), in which the admission valve 30 is linked to two exhaust valves 31 so that on reversal the appropriate exhaust valve is opened. The ducts 18, 18<a> admitting fluid to the inner end of the vane are fitted with ball valves 39, which may be of rubber, which are automatically forced to their seats on the exhausting side of the vane. The admission of fluid to the inner end of the vane may be effected by manually adjusting a plug valve in the shaft so as to open the vane slot to the appropriate duct 18 or 18a in the drum 2. The cut-off valve arms 13a are in two parts hinged together and that one which is in action has a spring 37 turned round so that the two parts are held in line. Packing members are fitted in the abutment, in the vane tip, and in a partitioned groove in each end face of the rotor. The shaft bearings are adjustable by set screws.
