Abstract

310,701. Nicholls, W. H. June 14, 1928. Continuous-discharge apparatus with stationary containers. - Apparatus for disintegrating and mixing, without crushing, new and used foundry sand with a binder comprises a channel against one side of which relatively moving elements press the sand. The sand &c. is fed by a hopper 49 into the centre of a chamber comprising a fixed base 4 carrying removable plates 22 with upright annular walls 23 and a rotating cover carrying removable plates 33 with mixing elements 41 and 45. The walls 23 have passages 24, Fig. 1, to allow the sand to pass progressively from the centre, too rapid transit being prevented by elements 45 which force back the sand into the path of the mixers 41. These are arranged at an acute angle to the walls 23 and at a small distance therefrom. The sides of the chamber are formed by an unbroken wall 35 the base 4 being cut away at 51 to allow the sand to escape and here it is aerated &c. by a brush 52 which is driven by a belt 57 from the motor 20 which drives the cover through reducing gearing 16. Stationary pins 8 prevent the sand from being carried round at the centre without moving outwards.
