Compound boilers; heating by indirect contact of steam.-the exhaust from a turbine or other engine 35 driven by steam from a high-pressure boiler 4 is condensed in a heat-exchanger 29 serving as a low pressure boiler, the condensate being returned to the high pressure boiler by a pump 39. The heat-exchanger comprises steam generating tubes 22 connected to upper and lower drums 20, 24. The upper drum is connected by steam and water pipes 30, 31 to the steam drum 11 of a low pressure boiler 10 arranged above the high pressure boiler. The raw water from which the low pressure steam is generated is fed into the drum 11 through a pipe 34. The low pressure steam is used for heating purposes. High pressure steam may be led through a, pipe 41 directly into the heat-exchanger when the demand for low pressure steam is above the normal, or when the turbine is not in use.
