The fuel charged from a hopper c passes down a heating shaft b and rests on a rotary grate below which is a steam supply m. The conical mass o of fuel is surrounded by bv a bath i of molten salt which is fed and discharged through pipes k. The gases generated are removed through an outlet pipe e. Sodium or barium chloride may be used to form the heating medium.
