Abstract

303,531. Nelson, A. L. July 6, 1927. Pistons.-In lightweight metal pistons in which the head 10 is secured to the skirt 12 by struts as described in Specification 268,399, a pair of plate-like steel struts 18 are used, the struts being located entirely above the piston pin bearings. A pair of bosses 11 depending from the piston head each receive one of the struts 18 on which the piston head is cast. The struts may have a projection 19 ab the middle to grip the cast metal and may have bent ends to hold the skirt metal. The bosses 11 are strengthened by radial outer flanges 14. The flange 17 and rib 16 of Fig. 1 is replaced in Fig. 7 by a chordal web 13<1> extending between the skirt 12 and connecting the skirt to the bosses. The upper part of the skirt has an inturned flange. Specification 303,539 also is referred to.
