Abstract

377,449. Pistons. WELLER, S. B., 23, Cutenhoe Road, Luton. Aug. 11, 1931, No. 22659. [Class 122 (i).] An aluminium &c. piston is provided with one or more bearing members C of metal having a different coefficient of expansion e.g. steel or cast iron, and formed with inclined faces A<5>, A<6> engaging similarly shaped surfaces on the piston body. Relative radial movement occurs due to different expansions under heat and controls the piston clearance. The inclined surfaces may be of arcuate form, Fig. 2, in which case the members c are undivided and are mounted on the body by an axial and circumferential movement. Alternatively the body, Fig. 12, may be formed with grooves K3 having inclined sides K4, the bearing members K5 being split. The gudgeon pin may engage slots or holes in the said members to prevent relative rotation. In a modification, Fig. 16, the sleeve P is formed with a rib P<1> having sides inclined .to one another and engaging a groove N<6> in the body N. The rib may be cut away at N<5> adjacent the gudgeon pin bosses.
