Abstract
292,544. Nelson, A. L. June 22, 1927, [Convention date]. Pistons; balancing laterally.-In a piston of the type having vertical webs 23 carrying the gudgeon-pin bosses and connected to a circular portion 25 of the skirt from which bearing portions 27 extend upwards, relatively inexpansible struts 10 extending between the bearing portions, casting strains are relieved by cutting converging slots 29 in one of the bearing portions from the edge of the skirt. The slots permit increase of the skirt diameter at right-angles to the gudgeon-pin axis and decrease in the direction of the gudgeon-pin axis. The struts 10 are embedded in the webs 23 and have inclined median flanges 11. The ends of the struts 'are also bent at an angle and are formed with vertical bars 30, Fig. 9, which are embedded in the bearing portions and constitute the point of attachment to the latter. The bars 30 are formed by cutting apertures 18 in the ends of the struts alternatively, more than one aperture 18 may be formed in each end, or the ends may be formed with T-shaped projections. Each strut is formed with a median notch 12, and with apertures 13 to increase binding with the metal of the webs 23. Holes 21 facilitate positioning during casting. The holes 13 may be replaced by elongated apertures or round holes. A strut may be formed as an open frame with their median portions 34, Fig. 8, and internal projections 35 to increase bonding with the webs 23. Specifications 268,399 and 304,250 are referred to.
