Pistons; balancing laterally.-In a piston of the type having a ring portion 15 carrying bearing slippers 16, 17 and connected to the head by webs 10 which carry the gudgeon-pin bosses, the webs 10 are connected to the ring 15 by horizontal arcuate webs 14 below the gudgeon-pin bosses, and the ring 15 is stiffened below the gaps 20, between the webs 10 and the slippers, by means of pads 21. The webs 10 are stiffened by internal ribs 11 and external ribs 12. A slot 22, Fig. 2, may extend from the edge of the skirt into one slipper 16, or slots 34, Fig. 10, may be made from the edge of the skirt towards the gudgeon-pin bosses. The slots 34 may extend into the gudgeon-pin openings, and in this case the slots terminate laterally in holes 33 in columns 32 extending downwards from the gudgeon-pin bosses. Struts 24 of inexpansible material extend between the slipper 16, 17, each strut being formed with a notch 29 to clear the gudgeon-pin bosses, the ends of the struts being lower than the middle. Holes 28 in the struts facilitate positioning during casting. The struts may have projections 26, 27, of different widths bent at an angle to the body portion and embedded in the slippers 16, 17, thus preventing outward expansion of the slippers. Alternatively, the ends of the struts may be curved and engage recesses in the slippers, thus preventing inward contraction. The struts may be clear of the webs 10, as shown in Fig. 2, or embedded in the webs, as shown in Fig. 10. Specifications 268,399, 287,154, 287,155, 301,094, and 301,095 are referred to.
