Pistons.-In a piston of light-metal alloy, in which a split skirt 6 is carried by means of webs 10 extending from the head to gudgeon-pin bosses, expansion of the skirt by the expansion of the head is avoided by making the webs 10 slightly flexible and by making the distance between the junctions of the webs with the head equal to that portion of the diameter of the piston head which has an expansion equal to the expansion of the skirt at its working temperature, and not more than from one third to one half the piston diameter. Distortion of the skirt is prevented by means of stiffening flanges 11, 12. In order to secure the requisite distance between the gudgeon-pin bosses, the webs 10 may be curved, as shown. Depressions 14 in the gudgeonpin bosses catch and supply oil to the gudgeonpin.
