Aeroplanes; ornithopters; propelling.-Propelling and sustaining arrangements for aircraft and boats comprise planes A - - C of which the points A, B are rigid and the parts B, C flexible, transversely pivoted in front of the centre of pressure at B, Fig. 1, on an oscillating lever M, so that the planes reverse their angles of incidence, during oscillation of the lever M, to abut against stops B<1>, B<2>. Pairs of planes may be arranged on levers oscillating in opposite directions, so that the forces acting on the planes when transferred to the centre of oscillation result only in a translational force. By rotating such a system through 90‹ a sustaining effect could be obtained. Rigid, sustaining planes K, L, Fig. 5, of variable incidence may be used with a number of pairs of planes a, a<1> or pairs of oppositely moving planes may be arranged in tandem. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the planes may be entirely rigid. Also the movement of the point B may be one of linear reciprocationinstead of oscillation about a centre O. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
