Abstract

302,404. Ricardo, H. R. Sept. 20, 1927. Shafts; clutches, friction.-In multicylinder reciprocating engines, liability to torsional oscillation in the crank shaft is reduced by employing a flywheel placed so that it has one or more cranks on each side of it and at its end a friction clutch formed wholly or mainly of aluminium or magnesium or their alloys having good heat conducting properties and low specific gravity, vanes in the clutch directing air to the neighbourhood of the friction surfaces. The flywheel may be so placed that the natural periods of oscillation of the shafting and accessories on either side of it are approximately equal, and at the end opposite to the clutch a torsional vibration damper may be provided. A clutch employing one or more central sliding plates may be used, and in that shown a steel plate J carrying frictional material J' slides on the driven shaft G and is gripped between steel plates K, L res pectively upon the casing D, secured to the crank shaft A, and upon the presser plate M which is actuated by levers O against the pressure of springs N. Vanes D<1>, M<1>, and E<3> are formed upon the casing D, the plate M, and the casing cover E, respectively, to direct air upon the frictional members.
