Clutches, friction; shafts and shafting; securing fly-wheels on shafts.-In order to damp out oscillations in the crankshafts or other shafts of internal-combustion or other engines, the rim of the fly-wheel or other gyrating mass is connected to its shaft by a friction coupling disposed between it and the driving-member of a clutch. As applied to a motor-vehicle, the fly-wheel 6 is coned to engage the driving-member 4 of the usual plate clutch, being held in frictional engagement therewith by the clutch spring 5, which is confined between the presser plate 8 and a disc 7 secured to the fly-wheel. Existing plant can be adapted by using the modified form shown in Fig. 2, wherein the fly-wheel rim 6 is pressed into engagement with a coned member 9 on the crankshaft 1 by a number of springs 12 bearing on a flange 13 of the member 9.
