Clutches, friction. - The engagement of a single-intermediate-plate clutch is rendered progressive by resiliently mounting an annular member g on the face of the driving-flywheel b<2>. An annular member may alternatively or additionally be similarly carried by the presser-plate c, which is splined to an extension b<5> of the flywheel and is withdrawable by radial levers d<6>. The ring g slides on pins g<1> and is pressed by springs g<2> bearing on plungers g<3> these springs being, in the aggregate, substantially weaker than the main springs c<2>. The ring g is confined in registering recesses in the flywheel b2 and extension b<5>. Friction facings are carried by the parts c, g to coact with the driven plate f. Specifications 122,250 and 249,931 are referred to.
