381,050. Torsional-oscillation dampers. JUNKERS, H., 21, Kaiserplatz, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. Jan. 18, 1932, No. 1478. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1931. [Class 108 (iii).] A torsional-oscillation damper for interposition in the drive from a reciprocating engine to a propeller 6 and which includes a torsionally-elastic intermediate shaft 4 also comprises a rigid shaft 7, concentric with the shaft 4, and connected to the rotary propeller 6 and to a damping-device which absorbs oscillatory energy. In one form, the propeller 6 is driven from the engine crank shaft 1 through a flange coupling 2, 3, Fig. 1, and the shaft 4. The damping-device includes spring-pressed friction plates 11, 12 secured respectively to the free end of the shaft 7 and to the coupling flange 2. In a modification, the propeller is driven through a reduction gear which includes a pinion 20 on the crank shaft and a pinion 21 on the shaft 4. In order to provide a fluidfriction damping-device, the free end 8<1> of the shaft 7 is formed with outwardly projecting blades 24, Fig. 3, which are situated between inwardly projecting blades 26 on the pinion 21 and the intervening space is filled with fluid. The damping-device may be of the electrical eddy-current type or of the kind which includes highly resilient materials.
